Updates typically happen when developers release security patches or add extra features. The WordPress dashboard will indicate when an update has been released.

It’s good practice to keep WordPress and all plugins updated to the latest version. The top two reasons for sites being hacked are insecure passwords & outdated (vulnerable) software, updates help to reduce the risk of that happening.
